Winter Garden Care Tips for your north west garden

Winter can be tough on gardens, but a few simple steps will keep your garden healthy and ready for spring. At White Mosaic, gardens is what we do. Our experience is second to none and not only do we design and build, but we advise. Here are essential winter care tips to care for your North West garden:

1. Protect Delicate Plants

Cover delicate plants with fleece or burlap to shield them from frost. It’s possible to buy specific covers from garden centres or online but honestly just old fleece blankets (maybe something the dog has used) works better than most. For potted plants, consider moving them indoors or into a greenhouse. In north west gardens can get far colder than down south or along the East coast so it’s so important to consider the protection of your garden from frost and extreme cold weather elements.

2. Mulch Garden Beds

A thick layer of mulch insulates roots and reduces soil erosion, helping plants survive the colder months. During autumn, consider leaving a lot of your fallen leaves as these create a great layer of protection and nutrition for beds and borders.

3. Prune Carefully

Winter is a good time to prune trees and shrubs. Wait until flowering has finished before cutting back shrubs to manage size and removing any dead or diseased branches. Pruning not only helps control size of plants and the space within your garden, but it helps promote healthy growth come spring.

4. Prepare Your Tools

Clean and store garden tools to prevent rust and damage. Anything left out in cold damp weather is likely to rust. You can easily clean tools in a bucket of collected rain water and dry them off in the winter sun before storing them away in a shed or storage box. Maintaining tools during winter ensures they stay strong and sharp and ready for spring.

If you’re looking to keep your north west garden thriving all year round, winter maintenance is essential and makes the spring transition smoother and more rewarding.
