Double award winner at Gardeners’ World Live

We’re all celebrating here at WM design Studio after winning a gold medal and the Best Construction award at the BBC Gardeners’ World Live Show in Birmingham,  June 16-19. Our garden was called Eat and Shelter, which featured the amazing Alfa outdoor wood-burning pizza oven we supply, as well as a fire/ ice table and a very contemporary corten steel pergola.

This garden utterly represents everything we do here at Warnes McGarr & Co. The outdoor kitchen has fast become our signature design, because it represents a new trend in how people use their gardens. In addition to this, it represents the extra effort we go to which makes our gardens wildlife friendly, such as hedgehog passes and bug hotels. All of these touches shows how important it is for us Brits to enjoy and live alongside nature.

The planting scheme was also our chief creative and designer Michael’s favourite too – with plenty of fabulous grasses, alongside edible planting such as fennel and artichoke, with some stunning flowering plants with a rich purple theme: Verbena Bonariensis, Salvia nemorosa “caradonna” and Sedum telephium “purple emperor”. This combination of planting creates a really interesting eye-catching texture, which can easily be replicated in any residential garden.

Our garden was part of the APL Avenue, and we were surrounded by some fantastic gardens. It was hard work getting this show garden to the standard we push ourselves to – but obviously having been awarded two medals made it all worth it.

One of the highlights for us was being awarded our prize by the very established designer Andrew Fisher Tomlin, who made the time to spend a good half hour with us talking through feedback about our garden design.
