Designing for Outdoor Dining

Whether it’s a quick coffee and breakfast in the morning sun, a family lunch on a Sunday, or a long evening spent with friends around the table, outdoor dining has a way of slowing things down and making everyday moments feel a little more memorable.

One of the things we often say to clients is that a garden should work for you. It should feel like a natural extension of your home and be made to suit your way of living, rather than a separate space that only gets used a few weeks of the year. Outdoor dining is a perfect example of this. A well-designed dining area isn’t just about placing a table on a patio; it’s about creating a space that feels inviting, comfortable and effortless to use, whatever the season.

At White Mosaic, every garden we design is bespoke because every client lives differently. Some people love to host large gatherings, while others want a quiet corner for a hot drink. Some need space for young children running around, while others are creating a garden that feels calm, elegant and easy to maintain. The best outdoor dining spaces begin with understanding how you actually use your garden, rather than how a magazine or social media post says you should use it.

Your Garden is an Extension of Your Home

A common misconception is that the garden sits outside the home, when in reality the two should be connected. We think about gardens in a similar way as we think about interiors: a series of spaces with different purposes, all linked together in a way that feels natural and easy to move through.

An outdoor dining area should feel like another room of the house. That might mean considering views from inside the property, positioning certain things by the back door for easy flow or choosing materials that complement the architecture of the home. The transition between indoors and outdoors is just as important as the dining space itself.

Creating Destinations Within the Garden

One of the ideas we use in many of our designs is creating destinations. Instead of having one large patio that does everything, we often design several smaller spaces with different functions and atmospheres.

A dining terrace might be the main entertaining area, while a smaller bistro table catches the morning sun at the far end of the garden. A bench tucked beneath a tree becomes a peaceful reading spot. A fire pit or outdoor lounge area offers somewhere to gather after dinner as the evening cools.

These destinations encourage movement through the garden and make even a smaller space feel more interesting and generous. They also allow the garden to adapt to different occasions. You might have a formal dining table for celebrations, but also a casual coffee spot that gets used every single day.

How Do You Like to Eat Outside?

This is a question we ask surprisingly often, because the answer has a huge impact on the design.

For some clients, outdoor dining is all about entertaining. They need generous circulation space around the table, easy access to an outdoor kitchen or barbecue area, lighting for evening use, and seating that can comfortably fit larger groups.

For others, the priority is simplicity: a table for two, surrounded by planting, where they can enjoy breakfast or lunch in peace.

Some families prefer relaxed, flexible spaces where children can move easily between the lawn and the dining area. Others enjoy more structured layouts with a stronger sense of formality.

The Importance of Thoughtful Design

Outdoor dining spaces may look effortless when they’re finished, but there is a surprising amount to consider behind the scenes.

Sunlight is one of the biggest factors. A terrace that is beautiful at midday may be unusable during a heatwave, while a space that never receives morning light can feel cold and uninviting for much of the year. We carefully consider the path of the sun, existing trees, neighbouring buildings and prevailing winds before deciding where a dining area should be located. Pergolas, trees, screens and planting can all help create a more comfortable location.

Shelter is equally important. A covered dining area can dramatically extend the amount of time you spend outdoors. Whether it’s a pergola with a retractable roof or a more substantial structure, shelter allows outdoor dining to continue even when the weather here in the UK is being typically unpredictable and outside of the summer months.

Heating, lighting and power also play a significant role. Thoughtfully integrated outdoor heaters, discreet lighting and accessible power points make a space feel usable well into the evening and across much more of the year.

Our Design Process

Every one of our project begins with understanding our clients and the way they live. We spend time discussing how the garden is used now, how they would like to use it in the future, and what matters most to them day to day.

From there, we develop a bespoke design that considers layout, materials, planting, lighting, levels, drainage and every practical detail that contributes to a successful garden. Our design process allows us to refine and adjust the scheme until everything feels right, ensuring that the finished garden is not only beautiful but genuinely works for the people who live with it. Only once that process is complete does our in-house construction team begin the build.

A Garden That Invites You Outside

Ultimately, designing for outdoor dining is about much more than a table and chairs. It is about creating a garden that draws you outside, supports the way you live, and feels like a natural extension of your home.

When a garden works beautifully in every season, it becomes one of the most valuable and enjoyable parts of your home.
