Light up your garden

The festive lights at RHS Bridgewater demonstrate how important it is to have good lighting in the winter. By using coloured uplighting at the bottom of individual trees, you can draw attention to specimen trees that you want to highlight.

As designers, we wouldn’t usually recommend going as far as the photo above (!), but we can certainly draw inspiration from the colours and ideas.

The above image of one of our garden designs shows how we use uplighting to highlight certain areas and draw the eye around the garden.

At a time when you may not use your garden much at all, by installing a really high quality lighting design system you can enjoy your outdoor space from the warmth of the house.

New arts and culture hub for Manchester

The Greater Manchester region has never been short of arts and cultural offerings, but 2023 looks to turbo-charge the region with the opening of Factory International. Currently being built on the site of the former ITV building, the huge arts centre will be the home of the world-renowned Manchester International Festival as well as other exhibitions and events.

Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle is in charge the opening ceremony, which will take place in October next year. The venue has also recently launched ticket sales for an exhibition from Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama for July next year as well.

What am I reading?

An old courthouse is London is being transformed into one of the largest rooftop forests in Europe, with 125 trees and 10,000 plants.

Called Roots in the Sky, the rooftop will have access for the public, as well as a bar, swimming pool and private terraces for the offices. There will be a passive water capture and irrigation system, and the huge number of plants will increase the wildlife in central London. I’m looking forward to finding out more about these plans.
