Do modern gardens look like outdoor bathrooms?

While most modern garden designs are plant-based, there is a concerning trend towards what I call ‘outdoor bathrooms’. This refers to the excessive use of wall-to-wall porcelain, devoid of plantings, wildlife, and any authentic design spirit.

While we understand the appeal of integrating modern and minimalist elements into a garden, the absence of greenery and nature is a disturbing trend. Gardens should not only serve aesthetic purposes but should also foster biodiversity and contribute to the overall ecosystem.

We have been avid users of slick contemporary materials, but this treatment is a step too far.

In our design process, we’ve always embraced a balanced approach, incorporating contemporary materials with the natural beauty of plants and the environment. We believe that the essence of a garden lies in its ability to connect us with nature, to stimulate our senses, and to provide a habitat for various species.

Using sleek, modern materials can enhance a garden’s aesthetic appeal, but it’s equally important to ensure these materials are used responsibly and in harmony with the surrounding ecosystem. Overemphasis on non-natural elements can disrupt this delicate balance, leading to a sterile environment that lacks biodiversity and life.

On top of that, removing large areas of soil and replacing it with paving slabs can create issues with water drainage as any excess rain cannot be as easily absorbed into the ground.

We are committed to creating designs that are not only visually stunning but also ecologically responsible. We aim to push the boundaries of design while respecting and preserving the natural world. In the face of trends like the ‘outdoor bathroom’, we continue to champion the importance of planting, ecology, and sustainable practices in landscape design.
